NEW YORK, July 27 (UPI) -- Football isn't going away anytime soon for Tom Coughlin.

The former New York Giants coach will work for the NFL's football operations department, according to ESPN's Jim Trotter.

In January, Coughlin stepped down from coaching the Giants for a dozen seasons and two Super Bowl victories. Trotter reported that his new role with the league has not been announced.

In May, Coughlin told TheMMQB.com's Peter King that he wants to be a coach again.

"I've coached 47 years of my life," Coughlin told King. "You take it away, and that's not an easy thing to duplicate."

"We'll see," Coughlin told King. "It'll take two to tango. The 70-year-old-man stuff will be a factor, and I'm sure they'll know this would be a three- or four-year thing...They'll have to know the guy. If I have an opportunity to speak to anyone, they'll see what I'd be able to do for them."

Weeks after he left the Giants, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora wrote "don't rule out Tom Coughlin coaching again in 2017."

"San Francisco sort of considered him, but that was more general manager Trent Baalke doing his due diligence while owner Jed York was tied up at the owner's meetings in Houston. Coughlin and York always would have been an odd mix, anyway," La Canfora wrote.

"Tampa (Dirk Koetter) and Tennessee (Mike Mularkey) were dead set on promoting from within and were only marginally open. The team that should have considered Coughlin most strongly to me is Miami," La Canfora wrote.

Coughlin, 69, has a 170-150 career record as a head coach, including a 12-7 record in the playoffs.
