Embattled quarterback Johnny Manziel has been suspended four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, the league announced Thursday.

The suspension would begin once the free agent signs with a team. Manziel has remained unsigned after some offseason issues which include being charged with assaulting his now-former girlfriend.

Manziel could face further discipline under the NFL's personal conduct policy over the alleged assault.

Manziel was released by the Cleveland Browns in March after two lackluster seasons that included numerous distractions.

Just last week, Manziel's father, Paul, told ESPN that his son was a "druggie," and that jail "would be the best place for him."

Manziel reportedly plans to seek help getting sober on July 1.

He previously spent 10 months in a rehab facility in Pennsylvania in 2015.

Manziel faces misdemeanor assault charges from the incident with Colleen Crowley in January. He plans to plead not guilty.

Manziel, a former Heisman Trophy winner at Texas A&M, was a first round pick by the Browns in 2014.

Manziel was spotted vacationing in Cabo San Lucas earlier this week.
