Tampa Bay Bucs: QB Jameis Winston looks to improve in 2016

TAMPA -- By any measurement, quarterback Jameis Winston had an impressive rookie season, passing for 4,042 yards, 22 touchdowns and earning a trip to the Pro Bowl as the Pepsi Rookie of the Year.

But the Tampa Bay Buccaneers believe Winston will be even better in Year 2.

"The more comfortable I get with the offense, the more stuff they can give to me," Winston said. "The more stuff they can put in my hands to go out there and execute."

Winston was considered one of the most pro-ready quarterbacks coming from Jimbo Fisher's offense at Florida State. But then-Bucs offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter simplified some things for him last season, at times giving him one side of the field to read the defense and limiting an audible to one run play and one pass play.

Winston sees more of the field after one season in the NFL, so his ability to change plays will increase with his recognition of defenses.

"I always went by the motto at Florida State, 'See a little, see a lot. See a lot, see nothing,'" Winston said. "I'm just paying attention to my keys and trying to go through the right progression.

"I think just executing the simple things is the right thing to do. You're never going to panic in those situations, but I'm pretty sure there will be things down the road that we can put in more protections or more audibles.

"Right now, I'm just doing the same things I did last year. This is minicamp and the OTAs. Most of these audibles and things come into game plans. So we're not game-planning to perfection. We're trying to do things right."

Winston and the Bucs' offense also thrived in the no-huddle offense and now head coach Koetter would like to add more of that in 2016.

"I think when you're playing fast-paced, the more you can cut out thinking, the better you are," Winston said. "Especially for the young guys that we had. You get up there, you call the play and you go with it."
