BUFFALO, N.Y., June 2 (UPI) -- While one New York NFL franchise deals with securing its quarterback long-term and another has brought in big time free agents, the Buffalo Bills are hoping it can remain healthy.

Wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who had foot surgery a few months ago, said that "nobody knows" when he will return to the field.

"Nobody knows what timetable, what or when I'll be back," Watkins told WKBW Buffalo.

Watkins says he does not know how or when the stress fracture in his left foot occurred.

The Bills have maintained that it expects Watkins to be ready for its Week 1 opener, September 11 at Baltimore.

"I think all I know is that Sammy won't miss time in the regular season," Bills coach Rex Ryan told WKBW. "But when he comes back during training camp? Nobody has given us a specific time, it's just that we're extremely confident that he'll be ready to roll when the season starts."

Watkins, 22, is due $2.2 million this season, $3.1 million in 2017, and has a club-option in 2018, before hitting free agency.

In two seasons with the Bills, Watkins has 125 receptions, for 2,029 yards, and 15 touchdowns.

The Bills began voluntary offseason conditioning April 18, had rookie minicamp from May 6 to May 8, and voluntary offseason conditioning from May 9 to May 12 and May 16 to May 19. OTAs began May 23 and resume Friday. The Bills have OTAs from June 6 to June 9, prior to June 14 mandatory minicamp through June 16.

Bills training camp begins July 30 at St. John Fisher College.
