Mariners' Robinson Cano fractures hand after being hit by pitch

May 14 (UPI) -- Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano suffered a fractured hand after being hit by a fastball in a 5-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

Cano left the game after suffering the fracture Sunday at Comerica Park in Detroit, Mich. He was at the plate facing Blaine Hardy in the top of the third inning during the painful exchange. The lefty had a 2-2 count against Cano before tossing in his sixth offering of the at-bat.

He threw in an 88.1 mph four-seam fastball. The pitch went high and inside on Cano, drilling him in the right hand and breaking the fifth metacarpal bone. Cano immediately grabbed the hand and bent over in pain, before taking a knee on the dirt.

The Mariners used Andrew Romine as a pinch-runner for the eight-time All-Star. Cano watched the game from the dugout after trainers wrapped up the injury. He went 0-for-1 on the day and is now hitting .287 this season.

"I knew right away," Cano told reporters. "It's kind of the same feeling when I broke my pinkie toe in Japan [during an offseason tour in 2015]. I knew right away."

Romine went 1-for-3 after making his way into the game. Hardy allowed eight hits and two runs, while tossing three strikeouts and one walk in 4.1 innings.

Cano said that he will fly to Philadelphia and see a hand specialist on Tuesday. The Mariners face the Minnesota Twins at 7:10 p.m. Monday at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minn. before a two-game series against the Texas Rangers in Seattle, Wash.
