MLB roundup: For the 21st consecutive time, yes, Cleveland Indians win

CLEVELAND -- Jay Bruce and Roberto Perez each homered as the Cleveland Indians set an American League record with their 21st consecutive win with a 5-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

Cleveland had been tied with the 2002 Oakland Athletics for the AL record for longest winning streak at 20.

The Indians are also tied with the 1935 Chicago Cubs for the second longest winning streak in major league history. The longest is 26 games by the 1916 New York Giants, although there was a tie game during that streak.

Mike Clevinger (10-5) gave up one earned run in 5 2/3 innings to get the win. Cody Allen pitched the ninth inning to earn his 27th save.

Yankees 3, Rays 2

NEW YORK -- Jaime Garcia allowed one run but came an out shy of qualifying for a win as New York scored three times in the top of the second inning and held on for a victory over Tampa Bay in a game relocated to Citi Field because of Hurricane Irma's impact on Florida.

The Yankees improved to 9-4 in 13 games since getting swept by the Cleveland Indians at home Aug. 28-30. Although the Rays showed highlight montages and players heard their usual walk-up music, the pro-Yankee crowd of 13,159 sat in the lower level for $25 to watch the game and nervously sweat out the final outs.

Garcia joined CC Sabathia as the second Yankee starting pitcher to get pulled just shy of qualifying for a win in this series. In each instance, it was so they would not face Tampa Bay slugger Evan Longoria for a third time.

White Sox 5, Royals 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Adam Engel and Tyler Saladino, two batters hitting less than .200, combined to drive in three runs as Chicago defeated Kansas City.

Avisail Garcia and Jose Abreu drove in runs in the ninth to snap a 3-3 tie.

Garcia's single scored Yoan Moncada, while Abreu's sacrifice fly got Tim Anderson home.
