June 17 (UPI) -- The Tampa Bay Rays added Trevor Plouffe to its roster Saturday after a trade with the Oakland Athletics. Tampa Bay sent cash considerations to Oakland in the deal. The Rays transferred right-handed pitcher Matt Andriese to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Plouffe.

Plouffe, 31, was drafted in the first round of the 2004 MLB June amateur draft. He played seven seasons for the Minnesota Twins before signing with the Athletics in January. He is hitting .214 this season with seven home runs and 14 RBI. Plouffe has played 52 games at third base this season. He was designated for assignment on Thursday. He is expected to join the Rays next week.
Plouffe is a career .245 hitter. His best season came in 2012, when he hit 24 home runs and swatted .235 in 119 games for the Twins. Last season Plouffe hit just 12 home runs but managed a career-best .260 batting average. He is playing on a one-year, $5.2 million contract. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the Rays will get more than $2 million to cover the remainder of Plouffe's deal.

The Rays don't currently have a need for a third baseman, with All-Star Evan Longoria manning the position. Plouffe could fit in as an alternate first baseman or a pinch hitter.
The Athletics brought up top prospect Matt Chapman on Thursday and will likely use him at third base for the rest of the season.
