The Detroit Tigers activated slugger Miguel Cabrera from the 10-day disabled list, the club announced on Tuesday. The first baseman was sidelined with a groin injury that caused him to miss nine games.
Cabrera, a two-time American League MVP, is batting .268 with three homers and nine RBI.
The Tigers optioned catcher/first baseman John Hicks to Triple-A Toledo to open up the roster spot. Hicks batted .423 with a homer and seven RBIs in seven games.
"It's always tough to tell somebody they've been sent down," Detroit manager Brad Ausmus told reporters. "But it's a little easier when you tell them they are being sent down because Miguel Cabrera is coming off the disabled list.
"They are smart guys. They can figure it out."
