March 4 (UPI) -- The Chicago White Sox placed veteran infielder Brett Lawrie on waivers Friday for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release.

Lawrie signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract in December. If Lawrie clears waivers, the White Sox will instead owe him $573,770 in termination pay.

Lawrie, 27, batted .248 with 12 homers and 36 RBIs in 94 games for the White Sox last season. He suffered a season-ending injury to his left leg in July.

He was again experiencing health issues during spring training and had yet to play in a game.

Chicago acquired Lawrie from Oakland following a 2015 campaign in which he established career bests of 16 homers and 60 RBIs for the Athletics.

Lawrie played for the Toronto Blue Jays from 2011-14 and was part of the package in which the Blue Jays pilfered 2015 American League MVP Josh Donaldson from the Athletics.

Lawrie has a career batting average of .261 with 71 homers and 253 RBIs in 588 games.
