Oakland Athletics naming field after Rickey Henderson

Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Rickey Henderson is about to 'steal' the name of the field at Oakland Coliseum.

Major League Baseball's all-time stolen base leader will be honored on April 3, before the Oakland Athletics host the Los Angeles Angels. The field at the Coliseum will be named "Rickey Henderson Field." Henderson is also joining the front office as a special assistant to the Athletics' president.

The 58-year-old played 14 of his 25 major league seasons with the Athletics. He also suited up for the Angels, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Henderson swiped 1,406 bases during that time. He also hit .279, with 297 career home runs, and won two Worlds Series titles. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009, with 94.8 percent of the vote on his first ballot.

"Rickey Henderson is the greatest Athletic of all time. It is fitting we honor and recognize his impact on our franchise by naming our playing field after him," Oakland A's president Dave Kaval said in a statement. "In addition to his current role on our baseball development staff, I am also excited he will be joining us in the front office to serve as a representative of Green and Gold baseball."

Henderson currently serves as a special instructor in the Athletics' minor-league system. The franchise will also hold Rickey Henderson Day on July 15, where the team will give away jerseys.
