IRVING, Texas -- James Hahn and Ricky Barnes each carded a 6-under 64 on Thursday to grab the lead from the early wave of golfers in the first round of play at the AT&T Byron Nelson.

The first round was contested under mostly sunny and windy conditions at the TPC Las Colinas in this northwest suburb of Dallas.

Hahn recorded six birdies without a bogey on his round, while Barnes had an up-and-down scorecard that featured eight birdies -- including four in five holes on the front nine -- and two bogeys.

Matt Kuchar, Jhonattan Vegas of Venezuela and Jason Kokrak are two strokes back after carding 66s. Bud Cauley, Brooks Koepka and John Huh reside another shot in arrears after shooting 67s.

Local favorite Jordan Spieth headed a list of eight players in the morning wave at 68.

Defending champion Sergio Garcia, world No. 1 Dustin Johnson and world No. 3 Jason Day were in the afternoon wave.

A handful of notable golfers likely played their way out of the tournament after dreadful opening rounds, including Shell Houston Open winner Russell Henley (76).
