Tennessee Vols contact former LSU Tigers coach Les Miles about head coaching job

The latest twist in the Tennessee coaching search features a report that former LSU coach Les Miles has been contacted about the vacancy.

The 64-year-old Miles is interested in getting back into coaching and a report from 247sports.com states new Tennessee athletic director Phillip Fulmer contacted Miles on Saturday.

The Volunteers have pursued at least half dozen coaches without a hire and athletic director John Currie was removed from his position Friday for his apparent mismanagement of the search. Fulmer was named as the replacement Friday afternoon.

Miles was fired by LSU four games into the 2016 season. He went 114-34 in 11-plus seasons with the Tigers and guided the team to the 2007 national championship. His overall mark is 142-55 counting four seasons at Oklahoma State.

Tennessee originally reached a deal to hire Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano last Sunday before fan unrest prompted a reversal.

Flirtations with Duke's David Cutcliffe, Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy, Purdue's Jeff Brohm, North Carolina State's Dave Doeren and Washington State's Mike Leach failed to produce a coach. Leach reportedly reached agreement with Currie on Thursday night to become the coach before university officials ordered Currie back to campus and replaced him on Friday morning.

Fulmer, the former head man of Tennessee, coached against Miles' LSU teams on three occasions from 2005-07.

Miles interview for the Minnesota job last year but wasn't hired.

Tennessee also may turn to USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin, the quarterback who guided the school to the 1998 national title.
