Vanderbilt football players Tae Daley, Frank Coppet shot over stolen phone

Two Vanderbilt players suffered gunshot wounds while attempting to recover a stolen cell phone, multiple media outlets reported Tuesday.

Freshman defensive back Tae Daley, 18, suffered a noncritical gunshot wound to his leg, and redshirt freshman defensive back Frank Coppet, 18, had noncritical birdshot wounds to his arms, Nashville police said Tuesday in a statement, according to the Tennessean.

A third Vanderbilt player, sophomore wide receiver Donaven Tennyson, arranged a meeting to recover a cell phone that had been stolen while in Nashville.

According to the Tennessean, Tennyson met with a prospective buyer on Monday after trying to sell his cell phone on the internet. The phone was apparently stolen before he could complete the sale, and Tennyson later saw his cell phone for sale on the same site.

He then posed as a possible buyer of the phone, and arranged a meeting with the seller.

Tennyson, Daley and Coppet arrived at a Target parking lot and had a pellet gun with them. They pulled up alongside the seller's car and Coppet got out with the pellet pistol in his hand.

However, a man in the other car got out and shot at them with a real pistol. A second man in that car fired a shotgun.

Vanderbilt officials have not responded to the incident.

Despite being a wide receiver, Tennyson did not catch any passes last season but rushed for 28 yards on four carries in eight games.

Daley was an early enrollee in Vanderbilt's 2017 recruiting class.
