NFL Draft 2017: Miami Hurricanes football pro day draws a crowd

QB Brad Kaaya and TE David Njoku put on a show for spectators at University of Miami Pro Day workout.

All 32 teams were represented at the University of Miami Pro Day workout on Wednesday with New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert among the heavy hitters to see quarterback Brad Kaaya, projected first-round tight end David Njoku and the 13 "other" Hurricanes.

The 6-foot-4, 214 pound Kaaya looked smooth in the passing drills, just as he had a month ago at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Kaaya, currently No. 7 on NFLDraftScout.com's board among quarterbacks, showed off his experience working in a pro-style offense, showing smooth footwork in his drops and an efficient delivery of the ball, reportedly completing approximately 51 of 57 passes with a few drops. The conditions were ideal -- a polar opposite of the rain storm that pelted athletes and scouts a year ago.

Scouts expected a solid workout from Kaaya because, frankly, he looks the part when there is no pressure in his face. He is a three year starter who, at least statistically-speaking, played his best ball last year, completing a career-high 62 percent of his passes for 3,532 yards and 27 touchdowns against just seven interceptions.

While Kaaya does not possess an elite arm, he can make every NFL pass and demonstrated as much Wednesday, throwing the ball with touch down the middle and with the requisite zip toward the deep sidelines.

Where Kaaya gets himself in trouble is when he senses pressure. He does not possess the raw arm strength to put the ball on a line when unable to step into throws and he lacks the escapability of many of the other quarterbacks currently ranked ahead of him on NFLDraftScout.com's board, especially projected first-rounders Mitchell Trubisky (North Carolina), Deshaun Watson (Clemson) and Patrick Mahomes II (Texas Tech).

The tape shows that Kaaya is not a top-notch athlete -- even among quarterbacks -- but his true speed remains in question. Kaaya (and his agent) explained to scouts prior to Wednesday's workout that a turf toe injury suffered against Virginia Tech last season remains an issue, which kept him from running the 40-yard dash in Indianapolis and at the Pro Day.

While speed and overall raw athleticism is a concern for Kaaya, that certainly is not the case for Njoku, who was clocked in the mid-to-high 4.4s in the 40-yard dash and recorded a 40-inch vertical jump at 6-foot-4, 246 pounds.

Njoku remains somewhat unpolished and did drop at least one pass Wednesday but overall caught the ball well. His perceived upside has scouts excited, so much so that some feel that he has a chance at overtaking Alabama's O.J. Howard as the first tight end selected this year.

Other top times were turned in by wide receiver Stacy Coley (4.35) and cornerback Corn Elder (4.45), each of whom currently rank as Day Three prospects on NFLDraftScout.com's board.
