Notre Dame wide receiver Corey Robinson retires

SOUTH BEND, Ind., June 15 (UPI) -- Corey Robinson, the son of NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson, has retired from sports due to concussions.

Robinson is just 21-years-old and suited up for Notre Dame from 2013 through last season. At 6-foot, 5-inches, Robinson has NFL size. In three seasons, he hauled in 65 receptions for 896 yards for the Fighting Irish.

The wide receiver missed most of spring practice because of a concussion and made the final announcement Wednesday. He is also the student body president at Notre Dame.

In the last year, Robinson had three diagnosed concussions. Robinson will stay on the sidelines as a student assistant coach, according to the Chicago Tribune.

"After much contemplation and prayer, I have decided not to continue playing football due to multiple concussions," Robinson said in a statement. "I couldn't have come to this difficult personal decision without the incredible support from so many within the Notre Dame football program."

Robinson majors in liberal studies with a minor in business economics.

"This was an extremely tough decision for Corey," Irish coach Brian Kelly said in a statement. "He's such a committed kid to everything he does--whether its academics, football, community service or campus leadership initiatives--that he wanted to finish four-year career on the field. He was so excited to lead a group of young receiver this fall."

'While that won't happen in the manner Corey initially intended, he will remain involved with the program on a day-to-day basis as a student assistant. He sets a remarkable example for all our players--not only how to represent yourself on and off the field, but also how working hard through adversity can lead to tremendous success."
