Finebaum focused some comments on an "overrated" Golson, before Golson heads under center for the Seminoles, a season after quarterbacking Notre Dame.

"I realize that they're trying to replace Jameis Winston," Finebaum said. "They have Golson, who to me, has been unimpressive since the 2012 season at Notre Dame."

Golson later responded on Twitter.

"The fire been lit, but thanks @paulfinebaum for adding fuel to it! #IHearTheWhispers #MJinspired #NoleNation," Golson tweeted.

Golson led Notre Dame to an undefeated regular season in 2012 and an appearance the BCS Championship Game. The Fighting Irish were later throttled by Alabama. He missed the 2013 season following a suspension for academic misconduct. Golson started out the season hot last year, leading the Irish to a 6-0 start. But the Irish fell to the Seminoles and continued on a downward spiral.

Before standing up to Finebaum, Golson tweeted the comments to several teammates. Golson was 443-of-745, for 5,850 yards, 41 touchdowns and 20 interceptions in two seasons for the Irish. Golson competed 59.5 percent of his passes, while rushing for 581 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Florida State is ranked No. 8 in the Amway Coaches Poll. Finebaum said the Seminoles have "no business" being in the top 10.

Golson is competing with Sean Maguire for the starting job in Tallahassee.
