MIAMI, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- Former Miami-Florida defensive back JoJo Nicolas has died after a car crash on a Miami highway, his brother said Wednesday. He was 24.

Abner Davis told reporters gathered at Jackson Memorial Hospital Nicolas died of injuries suffered when his vehicle crashed into the rear of a refrigerated tractor trailer on the MacArthur Causeway early Tuesday, the Miami Herald reported.

The newspaper said ex-Hurricane player had posted on social media he was celebrating his March 3 birthday at a South Beach night club three hours before the 5 a.m. accident, which paralyzed rush-hour traffic on the busy causeway.

Miami Beach, Fla., Police said Tuesday Nicolas had been hospitalized in critical condition after being freed from his Lexus, which was wedged underneath the truck.

Department spokeswoman Vivian Hernandez said in investigation into the crash was continuing.

A four-year letter-winner, Nicolas played for the Hurricanes from 2007-11.

He previously starred at Homewood, Fla., Senior High.
