WACO, Texas, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Eddie Rbiles, the brother of Baylor University football Coach Art Briles, has died at his home in Abilene, Texas, his pastor said. He was 59.
Eddie Briles, who worked as a nurse, died Wednesday after he was taken off a ventilator at a hospital where he was being treated for a head injury, the Rev. John Greeson, pastor at the Rule Church of Christ in Rule, Texas, said.
He recently appeared in a "College GameDay" feature and an ESPN.com feature about his brother, ESPN.com reported.
Greeson said Art Briles was able to visit his brother before he died.
"Art talked to him," Greeson said. "The family said Art was a good motivator and maybe he could motivate him. I don't know if Eddie ever responded to him. It's a tragic thing. We can't know why it happened. Art is crushed. It's really going to be rough for him."
Baylor University released a statement offering condolences to the Briles family.
"Our deepest condolences go out on behalf of Baylor Nation to the Briles family following the loss of Coach Art Briles' older brother Eddie earlier today," Baylor Athletic Director Ian McCaw said in the statement. "We've seen an immediate and overwhelming outpouring of love and sympathy. We ask Baylor Nation to support Coach Briles and his family by respecting their privacy as they mourn their loss."
