Man sentenced to 20 1/2 years in murder of FIU football player

MIAMI, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- A former Florida International University student convicted of killing football player Kendall Berry in 2010 has been sentenced to 20 1/2 years in prison.

A jury convicted Quentin Wyche of second-degree murder in September, in the death of Berry, then 22, who was stabbed to death on campus. The slaying followed a confrontation between Wyche, 25, and Berry's girlfriend, and a brawl involving several football players, The Miami Herald reported.

Berry's death rocked the Miami campus, and tested Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law, the newspaper said.

The sentence, handed down in Miami Monday by Judge Miguel de la O, was the minimum required sentence for the conviction.
