BLACKSBURG, Va., Oct. 12 (UPI) -- Fifteenth-ranked Virginia Tech got four field goals from Cody Journell and notched eight sacks Saturday in a 19-9 victory over Pittsburgh.
Logan Thomas threw for 239 yards and a touchdown for the Hokies (6-1, 3-0 ACC), who held Pitt (3-2, 2-2) to 210 total yards of offense and did not allow a touchdown until 2:01 was left in the game.
Pitt's Tom Savage completed 13-of-28 passes for 187 yards, including five catches by Devin Street for 104 yards. Savage spent much of the afternoon under pressure from the Hokie defense, which registered eight sacks and limited the Panthers to 23 rushing yards.
Thomas threw 27 yards to Kalvin Cline for a touchdown in the first quarter that gave Tech a 7-0 lead and then let the defense and Journell do the rest.
Journell connected from 48, 27, 42 and 23 yards to keep the game out of Pitt's reach.
