Columbia lineman Chad Washington charged with on-campus hate crime

NEW YORK, May 8 (UPI) -- Columbia University defensive lineman Chad Washington was charged with a hate crime after an altercation on the New York City campus, police said.

Washington, 19, who is black, allegedly grabbed a 19-year-old man, who is Asian, outside a dorm Sunday and made ethnic slurs while threatening to beat him, police said after Washington was arrested Tuesday.

Washington, who is 6-foot-4 and weighs 250 pounds, was charged with aggravated assault as a hate crime, the New York Post reported Wednesday.
