Tennessee State sued over football player's death

NASHVILLE, April 30 (UPI) -- The parents of a Tennessee State University player, who died last season on the practice field, have filed a $5 million wrongful death suit against the school.

The suit, brought by Wayne Jones Jr. and Sonya Jones, claims coaches and trainers failed to provide adequate care for their son, Wayne Jones III, when he suffered cardiac arrest at a Nov. 7, 2012, non-contact practice.

Jones, a redshirt, walk-on defensive back, was hospitalized and pronounced dead that afternoon, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported Tuesday.

"No assistance was provided to him and an unreasonable period of time elapsed before anyone approached him or attempted to provide any help," the lawsuit contends.

School officials offered no comment on the suit. It wasn't reported what court the suit was filed.
