STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Fran Ganter, a Penn State athlete, coach and administrator for 46 years, retires at the end of February, the school's athletic department announced.

He was in the news for his role in delivering a letter to football coach Joe Paterno, advising Paterno of his firing by the university's Board of Trustees in November 2011, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Wednesday.

Ganter was a Penn State running back from 1967 to 1970, playing in two Orange bowls. He began coaching after graduation and was the team's offensive coordinator and assistant head coach, and later was the associate athletic director for football administration.
