COL FB: Texas A&M 41, Oklahoma 13

ARLINGTON, Texas, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Johnny Manziel enhanced his status as college football's leading player with a big show Friday that gave Texas A&M a 41-13 Cotton Bowl win over Oklahoma.

Manziel, who last month became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, accounted for 517 yards and four touchdowns to cap a season that will make him the most-watched college player in the country heading into the 2013 season.

The Aggies quarterback ran for two touchdowns in the first half and threw for two more in the second. The Texas A&M defense put on an outstanding performance as well, keeping Oklahoma out of the end zone until late in the second quarter and then shutting out the Sooners over the final two periods while Manziel was building the lead.

Manziel completed 22-of-34 passes for 288 yards and ran 17 times for 229 more. He threw one interception, but that came when a perfect pass into the end zone bounced off the hands of the intended receiver into those of an Oklahoma defender.

The Sooners did not sack Manziel a single time.

Manziel drove Texas A&M 80 yards the first time it had the ball and he scored on a 23-yard run. His 5-yard touchdown sprint in the second quarter gave the Aggies a 14-6 lead, which Oklahoma trimmed to 14-13 on a 6-yard throw from Landry Jones to Justin Browne with 1:16 to go in the first half.

The Aggies added four touchdowns in the second half on runs of 7 yards by Ben Malena and 30 yards by Trey Williams along with scoring throws from Manziel of 33 yards to Ryan Swope and 34 yards to Uzoma Nwachukwu.

Texas A&M handed Oklahoma its most one-sided loss since the Sooners also fell by 28 points to Texas Tech three years ago. The Aggies outgained the Sooners 634 yards to 403 despite the fact Oklahoma ran 22 more plays than did Texas A&M.

The Aggies closed out their season at 11-2, a campaign highlighted not only by the rout of Oklahoma but by a shocking win over Alabama in November. Alabama will play for the national championship Monday against Notre Dame.

Texas A&M's losses this season came against Florida and LSU by a total of eight points.

Oklahoma lost to Notre Dame in October, then won five games in a row before running into the Aggies. The Sooners finished 10-3.

Jones finished his Oklahoma career by completing 35-of-49 passes for 279 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
