CINCINNATI, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Texas Tech head football Coach Tommy Tuberville resigned Saturday to take a similar position at the University of Cincinnati.

In the surprising move, Tuberville will take over as Bearcats mentor for Butch Jones, who revealed Friday he had taken the vacant head coaching job at Tennessee.

Interim head Coach Steve Stripling will guide Cincinnati in the upcoming Belk Bowl against Duke.

Tuberville, 58, leaves the Aggies after guiding them to a 7-5 record this season. His squad will play Minnesota in the Dec. 28 Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas.

He has compiled a 130-77 mark in a 17-year career at Mississippi, Auburn and Texas Tech.
