South Carolina extends Spurrier's contract

COLUMBIA, S.C., Dec. 3 (UPI) -- The University of South Carolina said Monday it has extended the contract of head football Coach Steve Spurrier through 2017.

Gamecocks Athletics Director Ray Tanner said the decision was made to add two more years to Spurrier's current deal after the team finished 10-2 in the regular season following a school-record 11-2 mark last year, which ended with a Capital One Bowl win over Nebraska.

"We have had another tremendous year on the football field, winning 10 games for the second straight year and for just the third time in school history," Tanner said.

The 67-year-old, seven-time SEC Coach of the Year has compiled a 65-37 record in eight seasons, taking the Gamecocks to five consecutive bowl games, including this year's match-up against Michigan in the Outback Bowl.

"We have achieved a lot of goals but have not yet won the SEC Championship," the coach said. "Hopefully, we can do that within the next couple of years."
