Oregon new No. 1 in coaches' poll

MCLEAN, Va., Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Oregon takes over the No. 1 spot in the USA Today Coaches poll followed by second-ranked Kansas State, with Notre Dame in third.

Alabama, which had been on top of the poll since the first regular-season vote, was defeated by Texas A&M at home 29-24 last week. Also losing was Louisville, leaving three undefeated teams -- Oregon, Kansas States and Notre Dame, all 10-0 -- that are eligible for post-season play.

Oregon receives 44 of the 59 first-place mentions by the coaches while Kansas State gets 14 and Notre Dame one. Oregon was ranked fifth in the pre-season poll but little was expected of Kansas State (pre-season 21) or Notre Dame (pre-season 24).

Georgia (9-1) moves up one place to fourth, with SEC rival Alabama (9-1) in fifth. Florida State (9-1) sits in sixth and Florida (9-1) comes in seventh. Louisiana State (8-2) moves to eighth, switching places with No. 9 Clemson (9-1). No. 10 Texas A&M (8-2), up four spots this week, gives the SEC five teams in the Top 10.

South Carolina (8-2) remains 11th but Oklahoma (7-2) moves up to No. 12 with 13th-rated Stanford (8-2), No. 14 Nebraska (8-2) and 15th-ranked Texas (8-2) all improving their showings two places.

UCLA (8-2) goes from 19th to No. 16 but Oregon State (7-2) drops five places to 17 and Louisville (9-1) plummets eight spots to 18th. Louisiana Tech (9-1), 18th last week, is 19th and Rutgers (8-1) is again 20th.

Southern California (7-3) is voted the No. 21 position ahead of No. 22 Boise State (8-2). No. 23 Michigan (7-3), 24th-ranked Oklahoma State (6-3) and No. 25 Texas Tech (7-3) were all unranked last week.

Northwestern, Mississippi State and Toledo fall out of the rankings this week.

Oklahoma State and Texas Tech go against each other this week with other key matchups coming from the Pac-12 where Stanford is at Oregon and Southern California goes to UCLA.
