STATESBORO, Ga., Nov. 6 (UPI) -- All-America nose tackle Brent Russell was suspended from the Georgia Southern football team following an arrest last weekend.

Russell was arrested by Georgia Southern campus police early Sunday and charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

Police said they were called to a restaurant to investigate a fight. Russell was asked to leave the scene but allegedly refused.

The Savannah Morning News reported Georgia Southern Coach Jeff Monken said Monday Russell was suspended from the team indefinitely.

"We're in the people development business and it's our job as coaches to teach lessons to these guys," Monken told the newspaper. "Sometimes that takes harsh punishment. [Russell] got in trouble. He did something stupid. I know he's remorseful for it but I always try to punish appropriately."

Russell is a 6-foot, 300-pound senior. He's a three-time nominee for the Buck Buchanan Award, given to the Football Championship Subdivision top defensive players. He is tied for the school record for quarterback sacks.

Georgia Southern (7-2) plays Howard in a non-conference game Saturday and concludes its regular season Nov. 17 against No. 5 Georgia.
