Kansas State moving up in coaches' ranking

MCLEAN, Va., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Alabama is still a unanimous No. 1 but Kansas State moves close to second-ranked Oregon in the USA Today Coaches football poll.

Alabama (8-0) receives all 59 first place mentions for a third week. The Crimson Tide, who last week handed Mississippi State its first loss, go against No. 5 Louisiana State Saturday.

Oregon (8-0) romped over Colorado but Kansas State (8-0) beat a ranked opponent for the third consecutive week and moves to No. 3 this week only 25 poll points back of Oregon. The Wildcats have a fourth straight ranked opponent this week as Oklahoma State has re-entered the Top 25 while Oregon draws No. 17 Southern California.

Notre Dame (8-0) moves from fifth to No. 4 and LSU (7-1) has taken the fifth spot.

Outside of Alabama and Oregon, no team holds the same position as in last week rankings. Georgia (7-1) is sixth, South Carolina (7-2) takes the 11th spot and Texas A&M (6-2) is 16th as all three move up five places. Rutgers plunges 10 places to 25th and Southern California drops nine from eighth in the week's biggest falls.

Florida State (8-1) is up three to No. 7 behind Georgia but Florida (7-2), after losing to Georgia, slips five spots to eighth. Clemson (7-2) and Louisville (8-0) are both up four to ninth and 10th, respectively.

No. 11 South Carolina is followed by Oklahoma (5-2), which goes from seventh to 12th after losing to Notre Dame. Oregon State (6-1) is No. 13 and Boise State (7-1) is 14th after both improve four spots. Stanford (6-2) takes the No. 15 place.

Texas A&M (6-2) is 16th while Southern California (6-2) comes in at No. 17 and Mississippi State (7-1) is 18th. West Virginia (5-2) climbs three to 19 and Texas Tech (6-2) is 20th.

Nebraska (6-2), unranked for the last three weeks, is 21st and Texas (6-2) is No. 22. Louisiana Tech (7-1) is 23rd and Oklahoma State (5-2) comes in 24th. Neither was ranked last week. Rutgers (7-1) is No. 25.

Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin drop out of the Top 25 this week.

In addition to ranked opponents for the top three ranked teams, key games this week include Texas A&M playing at Mississippi State and Texas visiting Texas Tech.
