RUSTON, La., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Johnny Manziel rolled up 577 yards of total offense in a record-setting performance Saturday that lifted No. 21 Texas A&M over No. 24 Louisiana Tech 59-57.
Manziel broke school and Southeastern Conference total yardage records with 396 passing yards and 181 rushing yards on 19 carries. The freshman signal-caller scored three times on the ground and threw for three scores for the Aggies (5-1, 2-1 SEC).
His 72-run scoring run with 2:04 remaining in the game gave the Aggies a 59-44 lead and proved to be the decisive score as the Bulldogs came charging back in the closing seconds.
Louisiana State (5-1. 2-1) recovered an onside kick and pulled to within two points with 1:46 left on Colby Cameron's 13-yard TD toss to Ray Holley, but Cameron's pass to R.P. Stuart on a 2-point conversion try failed.
The Bulldogs' Quinton Patton hauled down 21 passes for 233 yards and four touchdowns in a game that featured a combined 1,306 yards of total offense.
