Tar Heels player charged in felony assault

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Sept. 24 (UPI) -- A walk-on player for the University of North Carolina football team was been arrested and charged with felony assault, police said.

Nicholas Apostolos Weiler, 18, was arrested early Sunday after an officer saw him punch someone in the face, The (Raleigh,N.C.) News & Observer reported.

Weiler fled, but was arrested later, a police report said. In addition to the felony assault, Weiler was changed with simple assault, resisting arrest, underage possession of alcohol and possession of a fake ID.

The freshman punter is a non-scholarship player who hasn't played this season.

Kevin Best, a spokesman for the UNC athletics department, said Weiler was suspended indefinitely from all team activities.
