STATE COLLEGE, Pa., May 23 (UPI) -- Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno did not live long enough to collect his $14.3 million pension, but the funds will go to his wife, a spokesman said.

In a statement issued Tuesday, family spokesman Dan McGinn said Paterno's widow, Sue, will receive $10.1 million from the State Employees Retirement System in May, and the remainder over the next two years.

McGinn added the Paterno family will donate $1.5 million of the funds to the university and to local charities, bringing their lifetime contributions to $9 million.

The pension payout is in addition to a final contractual $5.5 million payout from Penn State that included a $3 million career bonus, the Pittsburgh, Pa., Tribune-Review said Wednesday.

Paterno died in January 2012 at age 85. In November 2011 a victory by Penn State made him the winningest coach in Division I college football history, with 409.
