TUSCALOOSA, Ala., April 17 (UPI) -- Alabama University's 2011 Bowl Championship Series trophy was shattered during a weekend accident, school officials said Monday.

Alabama athletic department spokesman Jeff Purinton said the $30,000 crystal trophy indicative of winning college football's national championship broke into pieces when a parent of an unnamed current Crimson Tide player accidentally knocked it over, The Birmingham (Ala.) News reported.

The accident happened Saturday when the Waterford Crystal trophy was inside the Mal Moore Athletic Facility during the Tide's A-Day scrimmage, Purinton said.

Hundreds of Alabama fans had earlier viewed and photographed the crystal football while it was displayed under a canopy outside Bryant-Denny Stadium, the News reported.

Purinton indicated the school is trying to determine how to replace the trophy, which Alabama earned after defeating Louisiana State 21-0 in the 2012 BCS national championship game.
