Doug Williams suing Grambling State

BATON ROUGE, La., April 16 (UPI) -- Grambling State football Coach Doug Williams is suing the Louisiana school, claiming it is trying to get out of fulfilling its contractual obligations to him.

"When the facts come out, the people of Louisiana will be astonished to learn of the promises made and later broken to Coach Doug Williams," Cleo Fields, one of Williams' attorneys, said. "Coach Williams has kept his word and performed as he promised."

Williams, who filed suit in state court Friday, was hired last year by the school where he starred as a college player before advancing to an NFL career. He led the Tigers to the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship this past season.

But now, he claims in his lawsuit, Grambling officials have tried to pull a "bait and switch," asking him to renegotiate for less, The (Baton Rouge) Advocate reported.

Williams names the school, GSU President Frank Pogue, the University of Louisiana System and others as defendants, the newspaper said.

UL System President Randy Moffett said officials have bargained in good faith.

"We have offered him one of the highest salary and incentive compensation packages in Grambling's conference," he said. "We believe that we did everything possible to come to a mutually beneficial arrangement without compromising the university's academic core."
