UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky is tentatively set for trial on sexual abuse charges May 14, a Pennsylvania judge said Friday.
Senior Judge John Cleland said, however, he will take at least a few days before deciding whether the jury for Sandusky's trial should be selected from outside Centre County. Sandusky and his lawyers opposed the request by prosecutors, who say too many people in the county have some affiliation with Penn State, the Centre Daily Times reported.
Sandusky faces 52 charges of child sex abuse, involving 10 boys during a 15-year period. Prosecutors say Sandusky met the boys through Second Mile, the organization he founded for at-risk youth.
"I have to say, 'No, I can't [talk to you],'" he said of his grandchildren. "They say, 'The only thing I want for my birthday is to see Poppy.'"
Prosecutors asked Cleland to have jurors chosen from outside Centre County to ensure a fair trial and protect the result from an appeal.
"One in every three people has a direct affiliation with the university and then you have the parents, children and siblings of those people," Senior Deputy Attorney General Joseph McGettigan argued.
The prosecutors also sought to have the terms of Sandusky's house arrest tightened after neighbors complained of him sitting on an outside deck near an elementary school playground.
However, defense attorneys argued individuals on house arrest typically are allowed outside their homes if other structures, including garages and decks, are adjacent.
The defense attorneys asked the judge to allow Sandusky to have visitors in his home. A decision on that matter is expected as early as Monday, The Morning Call said.
The 68-year-old former assistant coach has been under house arrest since posting $250,000 bail Dec. 7.
