NASHVILLE, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- Tennessee Titans head Coach Mike Munchak said Wednesday he has no interest in claiming the vacant coaching position at Penn State University.
Munchak quashed persistent rumors he would replace the fired Joe Paterno, telling The (Nashville) Tennessean, "I love my alma mater, but I have no interest in being the head coach at Penn State."
Munchak added, "I never want to leave Tennessee. I have a great deal of respect for Penn State and I hope they find a great coach there. But I am happy where I'm at."
The Titans coach addressed the issue after reports circulated Tuesday he was at the top of Penn State's wish list to replace Paterno, who was let go in the wake of a sexual abuse scandal surrounding longtime assistant Jerry Sandusky.
Munchak is nearing the end of his first season as coach of the Titans (8-7). He played at Penn State under Paterno from 1978-81 and carved out a Hall of Fame career as a guard for the Houston Oilers.
