LOS ANGELES, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- UCLA has hired Jim Mora as its head football coach, sources told the Los Angeles Times.

Mora, a longtime NFL assistant and head coach, will replace Rick Neuheisel and is the first head coach without a past connection to UCLA to be hired for the job since Red Sanders was tabbed in 1949.

The Times said Mora was one of four candidates interviewed for the position. Chris Peterson of Boise State and Miami's Al Golden reportedly were not interested in the job.

He takes over a program that was 21-29 in four seasons under Neuheisel. The Bruins went 6-7 this season and lost to Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game. They have also toiled in the shadow of the high-flying USC program.

The team plays in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Dec. 31 with offensive coordinator Mike Johnson acting as interim head coach.

Mora, 50, was born in Los Angeles. His father, Jim, was a UCLA assistant in 1974.
