AMHERST, Mass., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- The University of Massachusetts has fired football Coach Kevin Morris, who had led the Minutemen for three seasons.
UMass Athletic Director John McCutcheon announced the coaching change Monday.
A search for a replacement is under way, the school said on its Web site.
The Minutemen switch to the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision next season as a football-only member of the Mid-American Conference.
"I thank Kevin for his hard work during his eight years with the UMass football program including the last three as head coach," McCutcheon said. "With the transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision and the Mid-American Conference, I felt it was important for the program to have a new direction in leadership."
UMass finished 2011 with a 5-6 record. The team lost its last three games, including a 34-17 decision to James Madison Saturday.
The Minutemen were 16-17 in Morris' three seasons as coach. He was the team's offensive coordinator for five seasons before becoming head coach. He previously coached at Worcester Tech for six seasons.
