TUCSON, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Former Michigan head football Coach Rich Rodriguez has been hired as head coach by the University of Arizona, a school official said Monday.
Arizona Athletic Director Greg Byrne wrote in a Twitter post that Rodriguez would be introduced at a Tuesday press conference in Tucson.
Rodriguez, 48, replaces Mike Stoops. The Wildcats are hoping he and his spread offense can help the Pac-12 Conference program make its first-ever Rose Bowl appearance.
Rodriguez was fired by Michigan in January following a bowl loss to Mississippi State, ending a disappointing three-year tenure in Ann Arbor. He has been serving as a CBS Sports analyst this season.
Rodriguez coached West Virginia from 2001-07 and carries a 120-84-2 career record.
