New Mexico found its new basketball coach in its own state, hiring Paul Weir away from New Mexico State on Tuesday.

The 37-year-old Weir went 28-6 and made the NCAA Tournament in his lone season as coach of the Aggies. New Mexico State lost to Baylor in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Weir replaces Craig Neal, who was fired after going 76-52 over four seasons.

"In conducting this search, (Weir's) was a name that was on our radar from the beginning," New Mexico athletic director Paul Krebs said in a statement. "I was able to see many of their games this season, and Paul is a bright young mind in the game. His teams play with tremendous passion and energy."

Weir spent nine seasons as an assistant at New Mexico State before being promoted to head coach when Marvin Menzies departed for UNLV following the 2015-16 campaign.

Weir reportedly made $250,000 as the Aggies' head coach last season.
