Bob Knight endorses Donald Trump, talks bombing

By Alex Butler

EVANSVILLE, Ind., May 1 (UPI) -- Chair throwing met bomb-dropping, Thursday in Evansville, Indiana when Bob Knight gave his endorsement of Donald Trump.

Knight, the legendary former basketball coach of the Indiana Hoosiers, was known for his fiery personality during his tumultuous tenure. That tenure included emotional explosions while manning the sidelines, some which even led to him throwing chairs on the court. At Thursday's rally, he didn't shy away from making a spark by verbally applauding Trump's "guts" when it came to possibly bombing other countries.

"We gotta talk about this presidential crap just for a moment here," Knight at the rally. "You older folks remember this. Your mothers, fathers have taught you this. I'll tell you who they said wasn't presidential. I don't even know what the hell 'presidential' means, but they told him he wasn't presidential. And that guy they told all these people that wanted to say, 'You're not presidential,' that guy was Harry Truman."

"Harry Truman, with what he did in dropping and having the guts to drop the bomb in 1944, saved, saved millions of American lives," Knight said. "And that's what Harry Truman did and he became one of the three great presidents of the United States. And here's a man who would do the same thing because he's going to become one of the four great presidents of the United States."

Truman did not take presidential office until 1945, but was in power toward the end of the war, approving the dropping of atomic bombs. United States bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed more than 150,000 people.

Knight coached at Indiana from 1971 to 2000, amassing a 659-242 record, including three national championships. Knight coached for 42 years and also had stops at Army and Texas Tech. He currently sits at No. 3 for All-Time wins among college basketball coaches, behind Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Boeheim.
