Kansas basketball increased its chances of winning the 2017 national championship because of a decision announced by a high school student.

Josh Jackson, rated the nation's No. 1 recruit by at least two recruiting services, verbally committed to the Jayhawks on Monday night.

Both Rivals.com and 247Sports.com rate Jackson, a 6-foot-7 swingman from Detroit, as the country's top recruit. Scout.com ranks him No. 2, and ESPN.com slots him at No. 3.

In any case, it is clear Jackson is expected to have a major impact next season as a freshman.

The commitment by Jackson improves the Jayhawks' incoming class considerably. Before landing Jackson, Kansas' 2016 class was ranked 43rd in the country by 247Sports.com. Now, the Jayhawks' class is ranked 13th.

Kansas coach Bill Self landed the nation's top recruit for the second time in four years. In 2013, it was Andrew Wiggins.

The Jayhawks were ranked No. 1 in the final Associated Press regular-season poll, and they earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. However, they lost to eventual national champion Villanova in the Elite Eight.
