NCAA investigating Kanas player for receiving impermissible benefits

By Alex Butler

LAWRENCE, Kan., March 6 (UPI) -- While many teams are fighting to stay alive in March, Kansas is answering questions about player eligibility. Forward Cliff Alexander has been benched because of an "NCAA inquiry into possible impermissible benefits received by one or more of his family members from an NBA agent," according to Yahoo Sports.

Alexander has yet to be interviewed by the NCAA. The Big 12 champion Jayhawks played without the forward in wins against Texas and West Virginia.

Kansas coach Bill Self said he hopes that the freshman can return for the conference tournament.

"Hopefully, the NCAA can make a ruling by then," Self told ESPN's Andy Katz.

Alexander will not play until meeting with NCAA investigators, according to Yahoo Sports. Alexander is averaging 7.1 points and 5.3 rebounds in 17.6 minutes in 28 games this season. The Jayhawks begin Big 12 tournament play Thursday afternoon.

"The NCAA has alerted us to an issue that could affect Cliff's eligibility," Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger said in a statement. "As a precautionary measure Cliff will not take the court until we have resolved the issue."
