Two New Mexico State hoops players suspended after near-brawl

DENVER, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- New Mexico State basketballers KC Ross-Miller and Renaldo Dixon each were handed suspensions Friday after a near-brawl in a Western Athletic Conference game.

Ross-Miller was slapped with a two-game suspension and Dixon received a one-game ban in discipline handed out by WAC Commissioner Jeff Hurd following an altercation at the end of Thursday's game between the Aggies and Utah Valley at Orem.

The incident seconds after Utah Valley had rallied from a seven-point deficit in the final 2 1/2 minutes to post a 66-61 overtime victory.

Ross-Miller threw the game ball directly at the legs of Wolverines' player Holton Hunsacker moments after the end of the game, igniting a fight that drew in several fans who had rushed the floor.

Some other New Mexico State players had to be restrained by coaches.

"There obviously is no place in the Western Athletic Conference or intercollegiate athletics as a whole for the unfortunate events that took place at the conclusion of Thursday night's game," Hurd said.

"While the suspensions handed down are appropriate for the actions of the involved student-athletes, there will be a continued review of other incidents that occurred as a result of fans rushing the court."

Aggies Coach Marvin Menzies had already suspended Ross-Miller indefinitely after the incident.

"No matter what provoked KC, what he did was inexcusable and hence the suspension," Menzies said. "It is an honor and a privilege to wear an Aggie uniform and a responsibility comes with that privilege."
