Three more students hire attorneys in Rutgers basketball coach scandal

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Three more students have hired attorneys in a scandal that cost former Rutgers University basketball Coach Mike Rice his job, the New Jersey school said.

Rutgers fired Rice in April 2013 after video surfaced showing him shouting curses and gay slurs at players, and throwing a ball at some during practices.

A lawsuit by former player Derrick Randall is already in progress, and Tuesday the university released letters from attorneys for player Jerome Seagears and former players Robert Lumpkins and Dane Miller, indicating notices of claim or letters of representation, the (Newark, N.J.) Star-Ledger reported.

The case filed by Randall, who transferred and now attends and plays for Pitt, accuses Rice of assault and battery, charging the university and its athletic staff of negligence, emotional distress and discrimination.
