NASHVILLE, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Guard Eric McClellan, the leading scorer for Vanderbilt this season, has been kicked off the Commodores' basketball team after a violation of academic policy.

McClellan, a redshirt sophomore, was suspended from the team Wednesday for the spring semester for reportedly violating academic policies. Friday, Vanderbilt Coach Kevin Stallings said the suspension was to be permanent.

A statement from the school said the action was taken "based upon newly discovered information that came to light Wednesday evening."

McClellan had transferred to Vanderbilt from Tulsa. He was averaging 14.3 points in 12 games this season for the 8-5 Commodores. The team has three other players, including Rod Odom who averages 13.8 points a game, with scoring averages in double figures.

Vanderbilt hosts No. 16 Kentucky in an SEC game Saturday.
