CHARLESTON, W.Va., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- A West Virginia man who was assaulted and robbed by three University of Charleston basketball players has sued the school.
Andrew Rude, in a lawsuit filed in Kanawha County, charges the university recruited the three players and offered them athletic scholarships despite their violent criminal records in other states, Courthouse News Service reported. The players are not named as defendants.
Quincy Luther Washington was sentenced to 10 years in prison and Robert Keith Dreher and Terrell Lee Lipkins to two years each in a youth correctional facility for the April attack on Rude. All three were suspended from the university basketball team after they were arrested.
In his complaint, Rude said the university should have known of the students' "violent criminal pasts outside of the state of West Virginia." But, he said, "without regard to such clear character flaws and with regard to said defendant's stated admissions policies generally against admission of violent criminal offenders were received with open arms by defendant University of Charleston."
The university, a private school in the West Virginia capital, is in Division II of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
