AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Keith Appling, Adreian Payne and Branden Dawson scored all but 10 of Michigan State's points Saturday and the No. 5 Spartans edge upset-minded Oakland 67-63.
Appling scored 21 points, Payne added 20 with 10 rebounds and Dawson also had a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Spartans (8-1), who were coming off a 79-65 loss Wednesday to North Carolina.
Appling's 3-pointer with 7:23 remaining in the second half put Michigan State ahead for good at 53-50 and triggered a decisive 8-0 run.
The Golden Grizzlies (2-9) were led by Duke Mondy with 24 points. Travis Bader added 18.
