COL BKB: Michigan State 96, Virginia Tech 77

NEW YORK, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Adreian Payne put on a 31-point show Friday that launched No. 1 Michigan State to a 96-77 triumph over Virginia Tech.

The game was part of the 2K Sports Classic and the Spartans broke it open late in the first half to run their record to 5-0.

Payne made 11-of-15 shots from the field and added 10 rebounds. Gary Harris produced 19 points and Keith Appling had 13.

Virginia Tech did not score a point during the final 3:23 of the opening half, during which the Spartans went on a 10-point run to open a 46-33 lead at the break. Michigan State then outscored the Hokies 13-3 over the first five minutes of the second period.

Adam Smith scored 25 points for Virginia Tech (3-2) while Jarell Eddie had 23.
