CHARLESTON, S.C., Nov. 22 (UPI) -- Raphiael Putney fueled a second-half Massachusetts charge Friday that carried the Minutemen to an 81-65 upset of the 20th-ranked New Mexico Lobos.
The win boosts Massachusetts (5-0) into the finals of the Charleston (S.C.) Classic against the winner of Friday's scheduled game between Clemson and Davidson.
New Mexico (3-1) -- which twice needed buzzer-beaters to escape with a 97-94 win over Alabama-Birmingham in the first round Thursday -- didn't find that kind of magic Friday as Massachusetts ran off 16 straight points in the second half.
After New Mexico's Alex Kirk tied the score 61-61 with 7:56 to go, Putney converted a pass from Chaz Williams for a dunk to open the run. He added a tip-in and a 3-pointer before capping the spurt with another dunk that made the score 77-61 with 1:45 left.
Putney finished with 18 points while Williams had a team-high 19 points to go with five assists. Cady Lalanne added 16 points and 14 rebounds.
New Mexico got 32 points from Kirk, who also had 11 rebounds. Kendall Williams was second for the Lobos with 13 points.
